Whistlestop Tracks Political Candidates Based On Social Media Data

WS Factsheet.docxNow more than ever, social media has become an integral part of the political campaign, and the race has moved to the web. And according to a Pew Survey from 2011, almost half of all Americans make political decisions in part because of information and news shared with them online. As a result, candidates want to earn more Twitter followers, Facebook likes, and YouTube views than their opponents. Whistlestop, a new political technology startup launching today, wants to help democratize social media data on political candidates to allow voters to track and support these politicians. Basically, Whistlestop aggregates data from multiple social media sources, including Twitter and Facebook, and uses this data to create a site where candidates face off and success is measured, in real time, by candidates? digital support.

NuForce Air DAC wireless audio streamer on sale: $199 for iDevices, $179 for everything else
We may live in a digital world, but analog still rules the roost when it comes to audio, and a dedicated DAC can improve the quality of your tunes considerably. Back at CES, we teased you with NuForce's Air DAC that wirelessly streams music from mobile to your home stereo on the 2.4GHz band at a range of 30-65 feet (10-20 meters). Well, it's been priced and is now officially available. For those with Apple devices, the 30-pin iTX dongle will set you back $79, and those keeping their music elsewhere can grab the uTX USB transmitter for $59. On its own, the DAC receiver costs $149, though the whole iOS-compatible kit can be had for $199, while the USB version's yours for $179. PR's after the break.

CONTINUE IMPROVING COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE ...

What All Business Managers Need To Know To
Improve Communication In Their Workplace

In this blog, once again, I want to stress the importance (or rather, the necessity) of opening up a dialogue with ALL employees in any group or business. As I have mentioned many times here, I have been coaching (preaching?) business and executive improvement for over a quarter of a century now. Just recently two questions were asked of me that would indicate this message is still not getting across properly to those that need to practice it.

The first question came from a plant manager who asked me what he and his staff could do to get a better ?feel? of what was actually happening each day out in their factory. The second was from a male department supervisor of 46?(female) garment workers who wanted to develop a closer relationship (camaraderie and kinship were ?his? words) with his employees. I presented them both with pretty much the same response. That is, you have to give every single employee an opportunity to be asked ? and given an honest response ? to this question: ?What can we do to help you do your job (better).?

The bare essence of this question is paramount to ?successful business awareness?. As I have always advocated most business owners, executives, managers, and supervisors DO NOT KNOW all they should know about what is going on in their place of business. My experience has proven that rank-and-file employees usually seem to be the only ones aware of hidden discrepancies, costs, and serious problems ? ?because hardly anyone of real importance ever takes the time to ask them.

You NEED to set up a system of communicating with all employees in order to learn how to make effective, but yet easy-to-implement, improvements. As I suggested to both of these individuals, as well as to hundreds of others, visit http://www.b2bawareness.com and opt in for a free report ?Are You Asking The Right Questions To The Right People??. Many executives and managers have been blown away by the ?simplicity in the logic? asked in these ten questions. I have been told by many of my readers that this report made them want to change the way they managed immediately and asked for my help.

This site provides direct and easy to understand logic for any business to improve, and it should be a must read for anyone who leads people. For every business owner, executive, manager, and supervisor who views this site, I believe they will look forward to going to work the next day. This site offers an e-book entitled ?Successful Business Awareness??,?and any coaching support that may be needed to assure the promises made become reality. It is supported by many testimonials and claims from former and current clients.

If you are a business manager, executive or owner, find out for yourself why communication at work may seem lost ? but now can be found again, with positive and rewarding results.

To learn more about communication in the workplace and ?successful business awareness?, and how its use of ?panorizontal communication? will help you and your company, read what others say @ http://www.b2bawareness.com/testimonials.html and learn for yourself how you too can improve even further as a solid, sound communicator.

Thank you for visiting ? and I wish you nice days always,

Jimmy Kimmel Asks: Have You Ever Flashed Someone?

Can you tell if a woman has ever flashed someone just by looking at her?

Not a question we pondered before today, admittedly, but Jimmy Kimmel got us thinking about it. The late night host interviewed people on the street and asked them that very question, then polled the audience to see if they could guess right.

The results were mixed in terms of accuracy, but all pretty funny:

Sometimes, before you decide to even hire home improvement ...

Posted by Ray on February 20, 2012 in Uncategorized | ?

For example, if you are interested in remodeling your kitchen, you could possibly do some areas of the job yourself and require the assistance of kitchen remodeling contractors for other elements. If you have a small kitchen area, there may very well be certain remodeling and pattern techniques that enable you to better employ what space you have.

The major components to kitchen remodeling are storage, lighting, and appliances. Budget and space limits do not need to hamper your kitchen change. You may well transform your small kitchen to a room that?s warm and efficient.

Since you have a very specific number of available space to cooperate with, you should look into purchasing lightweight appliances. For example, a refrigerator that?s 24 inches deep, rather then 30 inches deep, will save you some space. You may also be innovative regarding when you store these home appliances, such directly below or above cabinets.

You may well ask your home improvement contractors to create an island in the heart of your kitchen so that you may use it for storage. Its handy location will make certain you may access the acceptable cooking and baking equipment from anywhere in the kitchen area, even while you are in the midst of preparing a meal or this baking a sweet.

To maximize counter and cabinet space, you may well store your pots and pans by hanging them up. Doing the following leaves additional storage space and supplies your kitchen area a homey look. Another remodeling option is to get a galley kitchen area design, which comes with cabinets and appliances that fall into line on several sides of an corridor. This design can provide your kitchen an added depth.

You may also create this illusion involving more space with clever, creative lighting. Light in the cabinets and counters to provide your kitchen area more dimension and to make it appear bigger. You may also install serious counters and cabinets to increase available work area and accommodate more home appliances.

Do your research to determine the type and level of help you may need for your kitchen remodeling project. You might want the assistance of architect and designer, or it?s possible you?ll feel comfortable simply banking on the advice of redesigning contractors. When you select your best course of action, you will be able to effectively transform your smallish kitchen into a competent work space.

Supermassive black holes are cannibals, new research suggests

Astronomers have found black holes and supermassive black holes. But the discovery of a mid-size black hole could support the idea that supermassive black holes grow by eating others.

In a galaxy 290 million light-years away, a cosmic fugitive has emerged from hiding, bearing clues about how galaxies and the supermassive black holes at their centers evolve.

    The fugitive:?the never-seen-before intermediate-sized black hole.

For three years, an international team of astronomers has had the elusive black hole under surveillance. The researchers now say they've found the strongest candidate yet for the mid-sized black hole, which may have been at the core of a dwarf galaxy that collided with a larger galaxy less than 200 million years ago.

If the analysis holds up, it would strengthen the notion that the black holes at the center of galaxies grow through collisions and mergers involving their host galaxies, just as the galaxies themselves are thought to grow. In the case of the fugitive, dubbed ESO 243-49 HLX-1, it's expected to eventually merge with the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy.

A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that nothing can escape its grip, even when traveling at the speed of light. Astronomers have found convincing evidence that black holes, which form from the collapse of individual stars, exist. They've also found convincing evidence that supermassive black holes exist in the hearts of galaxies.

But questions remain about whether?intermediate-mass black holes exist, let alone about how they formed, notes Mathieu Servillat, an astrophysicist and member of the team reporting the results in the journal Astrophysical Review Letters.

Although the team has been studying HLX-1 as if it were an intermediate-mass black hole, astronomers have yet to agree on any candidate as the real deal. In the past eight years, two other groups have each identified a candidate. But the evidence for each failed to convince other researchers.

?If intermediate black holes exist, they would have an impact at different stages of the evolution of the universe,? says?Dr. Servillat, a researcher at France's National Center for Space Studies. ?At the very beginning, you have to form intermediate-mass black holes. Is this a giant star that is collapsing? Is this a number of stellar-mass black holes accumulating to become an intermediate black hole??

For now, the team's work may shed light on how a midsized black hole contributes to the growth of a supermassive black hole.

HLX-1 was discovered in 2009 by Sean Farrell, a researcher at the University of Sydney in Australia, and leader of the team reporting these latest results. It betrayed its presence through x-ray emissions that were extraordinarily bright. The emissions come from heating of dust and gas as it spirals in toward the black hole's point of no return.

HLX-1 was too bright to be a black hole formed from the collapse of a single star. The best match between what Dr. Farrell observed and theorists' models of black-hole behavior suggested a black hole with about 20,000 times the mass of the sun. Stellar black holes are thought to range from three to 80 solar masses. Supermassive black holes range from 1 million to more than 1 billion solar masses.

In addition, over the three years the team has monitored the object, it has brightened and dimmed roughly once a year. This suggests that a star may be swinging around the black hole in an elliptical orbit, losing matter to the black hole with each closest approach and causing it to flare.

(AP) ? Relieved congressional bargainers say they've reached agreement on compromise legislation extending payroll tax cuts and benefits for the long-term unemployed through 2012, edging a white-hot political battle a major step closer to finally being resolved.

Rep. David Camp, R-Mich., and Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., the two top negotiators, strode from a conference room minutes after midnight Thursday to say that only technical issues and the drafting of legislative language remained. The bill would assure a continued tax cut for 160 million workers and jobless benefits for several million others, delivering top election-year priorities for President Barack Obama.

"It's a very good deal for the country," said Baucus, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee.

There were disconcerting hints that last-minute problems might still crop up. Neither Baucus nor Camp would predict whether Congress would approve the legislation by Friday, the original goal. And aides did not distribute summaries of the bill to reporters, which is usually routine when major accords are reached.

Even so, Baucus and Camp ? and a handful of other lawmakers who helped craft the package ? expressed confidence that their work on the roughly $150 billion measure was virtually complete.

"We're moving forward," said Camp, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee.

The temporary payroll tax cut and extra unemployment coverage initially ran into GOP resistance, some of which lingers.

But Republicans have largely concluded that it would be politically damaging to oppose the package, particularly in this presidential and congressional election year. That contrasted with December, when House Republicans refused to back a bipartisan Senate bill providing a two-month extension of the tax cuts and jobless benefits while bargainers completed a yearlong deal ? only to retreat under barrages of criticism from Republicans and conservatives around the country.

Underscoring that they had learned the consequences of seeming to block a middle-class tax cut, House Republicans removed the major hurdle to the legislation earlier this week when they agreed that the payroll tax cut ? comprising about two-thirds of the measure's cost ? would not have to be paid for with spending cuts.

The bargainers spent Wednesday trying to extinguish last-minute brushfires as some members of Congress sought changes in a tentative agreement that aides had described Tuesday.

Chief among the late disputes was a proposal to save around $15 billion ? about half the $30 billion cost of the bill's extended jobless benefits ? by requiring federal workers to contribute an additional 1.5 percent of their pay to their pensions.

Democrats, including Sen. Ben Cardin and others from Maryland, home to many government employees, resisted that plan, holding up a final handshake among congressional bargainers. The provision was ultimately changed to target the boost only at newly hired federal workers, requiring them to contribute 2.3 percent of their salaries toward defined benefit pensions.

There was little controversy over the main thrust of the bill.

A 2-percentage-point cut in the 6.2 percent Social Security payroll tax, which is deducted from workers' paychecks, would run through 2012. For a family earning $50,000 a year, the cut saves them $1,000 annually.

Extra unemployment benefits for people out of work the longest would be extended for the same period, and a 27 percent slash in federal reimbursements for physicians who treat Medicare patients would be averted.

Unless Congress acts, the tax cut and added jobless benefits would expire and doctors' Medicare payments would be reduced ? all on March 1.

In a GOP win, the bill would phase down the current maximum 99 weeks of jobless coverage to 73 weeks in the hardest-hit states by autumn, though most states would get no more than 63 weeks.

Besides increasing new federal workers' pension contributions, more savings were supposed to come from government sales of parts of the broadcast spectrum to wireless companies. The spectrum auction was supposed to raise about $15 billion ? even after $7 billion would be spent for a new communications network for emergency workers.

The government's main welfare program would be continued through this year. Republicans won a provision barring welfare recipients from using their electronic cards to withdraw cash from teller machines in liquor stores, strip clubs and casinos.

The $20 billion price tag for preventing the cut in doctors' Medicare reimbursements would be covered partly by trimming a fund Obama's health care overhaul created to help prevent obesity and smoking. There would also be reductions in Medicaid payments to hospitals that treat high numbers of uninsured patients.

Dropped from the final compromise were proposals to renew expiring business tax cuts; a GOP plan to require unemployment recipients to work toward high school equivalency diplomas; and another Republican provision, aimed at illegal immigrants, requiring low-income people to have Social Security numbers before they can get checks from the Internal Revenue Service for the children's tax credit.

Banner fundraising year for wealthy colleges

For the 99 percent of colleges, it was a pretty good fundraising year.

For the 1 percent of super-wealthy elite, it was a much better one that catapulted them even farther ahead of the pack.

The latest annual college fundraising figures out Wednesday show donations to colleges and universities rose 8.2 percent in fiscal 2011, crossing back over the $30 billion mark for just the second time ever, and improving many schools' financial footing after several lean years due to the economic downturn.

But the very richest universities accounted for nearly half the growth: Of the $30.3 billion collected by colleges and universities nationwide, $8.2 billion ? or 27 percent ? was raised by just the top 20 institutions. At those universities, fundraising was 15.3 percent higher than the year before, widening an already yawning wealth gap at the top of higher education.

Stanford University, which recently broke an all-time record by completing a 5-year, $6.2 billion fundraising campaign, led with $709.4 million collected in fiscal 2011, followed by Harvard ($639.2 million) and Yale ($580.3 million). Rounding out the list were private universities such as Columbia and Johns Hopkins, as well as elite public universities such as UCLA and the Universities of Texas, Wisconsin and North Carolina. Most campuses on the list have major medical schools and affiliated research centers, though No. 4 MIT ($534 million) is an exception.

In fact, the top 20 schools account for 2 percent of the 1,009 respondents to the annual Voluntary Support of Education survey by Council for Aid to Education. But they highlight a fundraising distribution that calls to mind last year's Occupy protests against U.S. income inequality. In fact, the fundraising distribution in higher education is more skewed than income: The top 25 percent of universities account for 86 percent of all private dollars raised for higher education, and the bottom quarter just 1 percent.

For colleges, the rich-get-richer trend feeds on itself in multiple ways. Already-wealthy universities can afford more staff to raise funds, and they have a disproportionate share of wealthy alumni. But they're also able to attract the most promising researchers, which helps them win the competition for dollars from philanthropists who want their money to have the best chance of creating new knowledge.

"The institutions that raise the most, they raise the most because they have a case to make for needing that much support," said survey director Ann Kaplan.

The fundraising numbers come a few weeks after another report showed that college endowments ? the investments universities hold to generate income in support of their mission ? have also nearly recovered from a hit that began with 2008 stock market crash and forced many schools to make painful budget cuts. The average college endowment returned 19.2 percent in fiscal 2011, according to data from the National Association of College and University Business Officers and Commonfund. There were 73 institutions with endowments over $1 billion, led by Harvard with $31.7 billion ? though that's still off its peak of about $37 billion at the end of 2008.

The billionaire schools account for $285 billion ? or 70 percent ? of the $408 billion in endowment money held by all colleges and universities.

The Top 20 institutions rely heavily on fundraising and endowments. At Stanford, for instance, endowment spending accounts for 20 percent of the university's $4.1 billion operating budget ? more than it gets from students (18 percent). The 99 percent schools typically get much more of their revenue from tuition, with endowments more akin to an emergency financial cushion.

Last year's fundraising total nationally remains $1.3 billion below the 2008 peak of $31.6 billion, and while some non-elite schools had good years, many were still struggling as the economy sputtered last year. Roughly two-thirds outside the Top 20 saw fundraising rise by less than the 8.2 percent national average.

Even some well-known institutions have had a hard slog. The University of Virginia, for instance, which fell just outside the latest Top 20 for 2011, came up about $400 million short on a planned eight-year, $3 billion campaign had been scheduled to wrap up last year.

Another challenge: Colleges typically have little flexibility on how endowment dollars are spent, Kaplan noted. Completely unrestricted gifts amounted to just 7.9 percent of donations; the rest are given for specific purposes, such as research, scholarships or endowed professorships. Roughly 14 percent was donated for buildings, property and equipment.

Alumni giving rose 9.9 percent nationally, and accounted for about 26 percent of the donations colleges receive. Corporate donations rose 6.6 percent. Donations from foundations, which remain the largest source of support at about 29 percent, rose 3.3 percent.

Amid shortages, hospitals trash scarce drugs

Mounting shortages of crucial drugs are creating a new dilemma for the nation?s hospital pharmacists, who say they find themselves caught between breaking strict government rules for storage and safety ? or throwing away vital and lifesaving medications.
