Have you ever stood on the shores of Duck Pond in Centennial Park and admired the view? Black swans swimming by, families of ducks moving through the water in formation, pelicans enjoying the sunshine and the sun bouncing off the water. That?s what most people see. But how many of us have looked down at the balustrade fence?
The Duck Pond fence was designed and installed in 1995.? It was the brain-child of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust?s Landscape Architect, Gillian Smart, who had a vision of creating a railing that accentuated the natural environment in which it would stand, whilst still retaining water views rather than being a barrier (see detail photos below).
And what an amazing job she did!
The Water Lilies on the fence
The curvaceous ornamental railing provided both a safety barrier and a timeless design that captured movement, rhythm and a sense of fun in the piece ? with animal charactures breaking out of the confines of the railing delight children and adults alike.
Gillian?s vision to accentuate the natural environment is seen in the curved lines of the railing that highlight the ripples of the water, while the post tops are abstract water lilies ? seen in the ponds of the Parklands ? are based on to traditional Egyptian designs. The curved posts themselves are the stems of the lilies, which are often extended into the decorative panels.
You can see ducks, dragon flies, frogs, tortoises and eels in the design ? depicting some of the flora and fauna found in the pond and are designed as humorous caricatures rather than naturalistic representations to bring the piece to life.
A great piece of hidden parklands that makes up this fascinating place.
